Co-operative ownership can make the company structure easier to understand, but it does not automatically prove where every server or backup is located. For data-sensitive workloads, I still separate ownership, physical hosting location and legal jurisdiction.

Cooptel is a Quebec telecommunications cooperative whose roots go back to 1944. Its history shows a long-running cooperative structure that later expanded from telephone service into Internet, fibre and other telecommunications services.

I would still contact the provider directly if server location, storage technology or other infrastructure details are important to the project.

What is a web hosting co-op?
A web hosting co-op is a hosting organization structured around cooperative ownership or governance rather than conventional investor ownership. Depending on the co-op, workers, customers or members may participate in ownership, elect directors or help shape how the organization operates.
Are all five organizations on this page legally cooperatives?
No. CanTrust Hosting Co-op, Cooptel and Westman Communications Group are cooperative organizations. Koumbit is a self-managed nonprofit collective, while Vancouver Community Network is a nonprofit community organization. I include the latter two as clearly labelled community-run alternatives rather than calling them legal co-ops.
Does a Canadian co-op guarantee that my server is in Canada?
No. Canadian ownership and server location are separate questions. A Canadian organization can still use third-party or foreign infrastructure, so I recommend checking the actual hosting location and network.
